US President Joe Biden honored personalities such as Bette Midler, Joni Mitchell, and Lorne Michaels at the Kennedy Center Honors, Lifetime Achievement Awards and Contribution to American Culture. “It’s kind of nice, it’s nice to see that the presidential box is busy again,” said host comedian David Letterman at the beginning of the ceremony. With his presence, Biden restored the presidential participation in the annual ceremony.
The Kennedy Center Honors Awards recognize lifetime achievement and contributions to American culture. This year, five people were awarded – singer Joni Mitchell, singer and actress Bette Midler, producer and co-creator of “Saturday Night Live” Lorne Michaels, vocalist Justino Diaz and music producer Berry Gordy.
“It’s quite nice to see that the presidential lodge is occupied once again.”
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, who had previously organized a party for the winners at the White House, attended the ceremony at the Kennedy Center. Thus, the American leader restored the presidential participation in the annual ceremony. Biden’s predecessor, Republican Donald Trump, never appeared at the ceremony. In turn, last year’s edition of the Kennedy Center Honors was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s kind of nice, it’s nice to see that the presidential box is busy again,” said host comedian David Letterman at the start of the Kennedy Center celebration. With this statement, he caused a standing ovation from the guests present at the awards ceremony.
The ceremony was also attended by the First Lady – Jill Biden, as well as US Vice President Kamala Harris with her husband Doug Emhoff.
Biden: If you can’t laugh at yourself, we’re in real trouble
Bette Midler told reporters what the White House party was like. “It was gorgeous,” she said. – Very clean. Beautifully. Great staff. The food was excellent. The wine was a bit sweet, she added.
During the ceremony, President Biden referred to “Saturday Night Live.” He referred to the fact that seven comedians played him on the show over the years. “If you can’t laugh at yourself, we’re in real trouble, and you make me laugh at myself a lot,” Biden told Lorne Michaels.
As the president said, comedy and other forms of art as well as cultural exports help the United States lead the way around the world by the strength of its example. “Throughout my career, I have met almost every world leader,” he said. “And let me tell you, not everyone sees satire that way.” You would all be in jail, he added.
