US President Donald Trump announced that he ordered the imposition of a 25 % duty and a wide range of sanctions against Colombia as well as local officials and their families. The reason was the disagreement of the Colombian president Gustavo Petro, that the migrants were deported by military planes.

Trump reacted on Sunday to Petra's decision prohibiting the landing of two military transport aircraft transporting deported – according to Trump – “illegal criminals”.

As the American president wrote in an entry posted on the Truth Social portal, the decision of “Socialist President”, which “is already very unpopular among his nation”, violated the national and public security of the USA. In retaliation, he announced a number of actions and sanctions against the authorities in Bogota.

Among them is a 25 % duty for all good imported with Colombiawhich is to increase to 50 percent during the week, the ban on entry for unspecified representatives of the Colombian authorities and “visa sanctions for all party members, families and supporting authorities”, increased border controls towards Colombian citizens and goods, as well as bank and financial sanctions.

“These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations in terms of receiving and sending criminals, whom he forced to enter the United States,” threatened Trump.

It is not clear when the duties and sanctions announced by Trump will come into force or who they will concern. For Colombia, the USAs are the largest trading partner, where almost 30 percent of all goods exported by this country are sold.

The decision of the Colombian president

Early in the morning on Sunday, the president of Colombia Gustavo Petro published an entry in which he opposed the actions of the US authorities towards migrants from his country. “I do not allow the inlet of American aircraft transporting Colombian migrants to our territory,” he wrote.

Petro emphasized in the entry that the government in Washington “must develop a report on decent treatment of migrants” before Colombia accepts them.

As the Reuters agency notes, his comment is another example of the growing dissatisfaction of Latin American countries in connection with the planned mass deportations by the US President Donald Trump.

“The migrant is not a criminal and should be treated with dignity”

In the next post, Petro released a short video published on the profile of the Colombian RCN radio. According to the radio station, the Brazilian government complained about the “inhuman” treatment of dozens of migrants with Brazil deported to Manaus, the largest city of Amazon. The Brazilian government applied to the USA for explanations in this matter.

“The migrant is not a criminal and should be treated with the dignity that man deserves” – he reminded. Petro emphasized that it was for this reason that the American military aircraft with Columbian migrants turned back.

“I can't force migrants to stay in a country that does not want them, but if this country turns them back, it should be with dignity and respect for them and for our country. We will accept our citizens with civilian planes, without treating them like criminals” he said.

On Friday, the Reuters agency announced About a similar event in Mexicowhich the government was to reject the application of Donald Trump's administration for landing permission in a country of an American military aircraft with deported migrants on board.
