The medical transport plane that crashed in Nevada on Friday apparently disintegrated before hitting the ground, authorities said. As it was emphasized, investigators are still collecting fragments of the wreckage in order to determine the cause of the disaster. There were five people on board the plane – no one survived.

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) sent a seven-person team of investigators to the scene Pilatus PC-12 plane crash in Nevada. The plane went down on Friday, February 24, in the evening near Stagecoach, about 70 kilometers southeast of the city of Reno.

Investigators are currently searching for fragments of the wreckage of the single-engine machine and examining them in order to determine the cause of the disaster. NTSB Vice President Bruce Landsberg called the attempt to determine the cause of the crash a “three-dimensional puzzle.” “It’s harder when you don’t have all the pieces in one place,” he explained at a press conference in Carson City on Sunday.

According to Bruce Landsberg, however, the plane apparently disintegrated before hitting the ground. – How do we know if the plane broke up in flight? We found parts of the plane within half to three quarters of a mile (800 meters to 1.2 kilometers – ed.) from the crash site – he said.

Medical plane crash

Flying from Reno to Salt Lake City the plane crashed during a winter storm. Before the accident, the National Weather Service (NWS) had issued a warning for snowstorms and strong winds up to 105 kilometers per hour for the area. On board the machine, apart from the patient being transported to the hospital, there were four other people: a pilot, a nurse, a paramedic and a member of the patient’s family. Care Flight, which supplies ambulances, helicopters and rescue planes, said no one survived the crash.

Stagecoach resident and former nurse Robin Hays told the Reno Gazette-Journal that she “knew the plane was in trouble”. The woman heard the plane fly over her house before it crashed moments later. – I knew it would fall apart. I was just hoping it wouldn’t hit my house,” she said. She admitted that after the accident she wanted to move to help, but the weather conditions prevented her from doing so. It was snowing and visibility was terrible. I don’t understand why this plane was allowed to take off,” she added.

Care Flight officials said they are suspending all flights and will cooperate with the investigation to determine when they will resume operations. According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), more than half a million patients in the United States use air ambulance services each month.
