For us, the most important thing is further strengthening of NATO’s eastern flank, further adaptation of NATO to current challenges and continuation of the policy of defense and deterrence of Russia, said Presidential Minister Marcin Przydacz on Friday after a meeting with the US President’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan. The talks concerned, among others, the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius, as well as military cooperation between Poland and the USA.

On Friday afternoon, talks at the National Security Council in Washington, attended by the head of the Office of International Policy in the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland, ended Marcin Przydacz and an adviser to the president USA Joe Biden for National Security Jake Sullivan.

– We are on the final straight when it comes to negotiating the relevant documents, the relevant decisions that are to be made at the NATO summit in Vilnius. President’s decision Andrzej Duda I came here to Washington so that certain issues, important from the perspective of the interest of the Polish state and the entire region, could be understood here and present in the shaping of American policy, said Przydacz. As he said, the conversation mainly concerned the situation at the front in Ukraine, but also the internal situation in the Russian Federation, in the context of the actions of Yevgeny Prigozhin and the situation on the Belarus.

Przydacz: there are already certain decisions on the conditions under which Ukraine is to join NATO

Przydacz said that there are already certain decisions on the conditions under which Ukraine is to join NATO and when it would take place.

– The discussion on this topic is ongoing at the NATO level. We all remember 2008 and the discussions about starting the process of Ukraine’s accession to NATO. Today, this discussion is on a completely different level, also being aware of the mistakes made in Bucharest. Had the decision on the MAP (Membership Action Plans – editor’s note) been made at that time, perhaps there would have been no invasion of Georgia and Crimea, Przydacz said. As he added, “we cannot make such mistakes this time and we are working on it.” – There are already some directional decisions here, for example regarding the functioning of a special one NATO-Ukraine Council, as well as on the conditions under which Ukraine would join in the future and when it would take place. What we’re working on is to make that kind of progress, some steps forward,” he said.

– We agreed with Jake Sullivan that Polish-American relations are in very good condition, as evidenced by the recent direct relations between our presidents – he said. He stressed that the American leader’s two visits to Warsaw in less than 12 months “emphasize the role that Poland plays today in international politics and security policy.” – Today I heard it here in the White House – reported Przydacz.

– We continue these diplomatic activities at various levels in the context of working out the most important decisions for the Vilnius summit in NATO. For us, what is most important is further strengthening of NATO’s eastern flank, further adaptation of NATO to current challenges and continuation of the policy of defense and deterrence of Russia, which has been called a direct threat to the security of the entire Alliance, said Przydacz.
