Train crash in Minnesota, USA. A 22-car train carrying ethanol and corn syrup derailed and burst into flames. Authorities ordered the evacuation of some residents in the town of Raymond.

A train carrying ethanol derailed in western Minnesota on Thursday. Four wagons caught fire.

“We didn’t know if they would explode,” said assistant local fire chief Ardell Tensen. The authorities decided to evacuate people living nearby. Raymond is inhabited by about 900 people.

22 wagons carrying ethanol and corn syrup derailed. About 10 contained ethanol, the BNSF rail network notified. “There are no other hazardous materials on the train and there were no injuries as a result of the incident,” public radio NPR reported, citing railway authorities.

According to the county sheriff’s office, the crash happened around 1am local time. The evacuation area was established within a radius of 800 meters from the crash site. Law enforcement officers and rescuers arrived at the scene.

Modern wagons did not explode

The fire was partially under control by noon. 6 am local time (13. in Poland). Firefighters allowed some of the ethanol to burn off. “BNSF staff are on site working with rescuers. The main track is blocked and it is not known when it will reopen,” NPR explained, reporting the events after several hours of action.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed hope at a press conference in Raymond that residents will be able to return to their homes on Friday. In his opinion, the derailed wagons were modern and designed in such a way that they would not explode.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) says 99.9 percent of all dangerous goods shipments arrive safely at their destination. According to the Federal Railway Administration (FRA), in the past year there were USA over 1,000 train derailments.
