A single-engine plane with two people on board crashed shortly after taking off from an airport in the US state of New York. No one survived, the media reported, citing the authorities that began investigating the circumstances of the crash.

The accident happened on Tuesday afternoon. A single-engine Cirrus SR22 crashed and burst into flames in a wooded area shortly after taking off from Jamestown Airport in New York, CBS News reported, citing authorities. The two adult men on board the aircraft did not survive the accident. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the crash. NTSB investigators were scheduled to arrive at the scene Wednesday morning.

Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone told a news conference that officials did not yet know what caused the accident. However, he suggested that the machine may have suffered a “catastrophic failure”. “There’s nothing left of the plane,” he admitted, assessing the effects of the fire that had broken out on the spot.

James Quattrone added that he “doesn’t believe” that the thick smoke caused by the massive fires in Quebec, Canada, played a role in the disaster, but “lefts it to investigators.” An NTSB official said limited visibility could cause problems, but said she didn’t want to speculate about the weather conditions at the time of the accident.
