Guillermo Soehnlein, co-founder of OceanGate, operator of the Titan boat, told CNN that everyone in the ocean research community is aware that there is always a risk of implosion going down to great depths. At the same time, he defended the experimental design of a boat built of titanium and carbon fiber, which employees and experts had previously raised concerns about.

“This is a tragic loss for families and for the ocean research community. All crew members were passionate about it. And they died doing what they believed in,” Guillermo Soehnlein told CNN.

In 2009, the businessman founded the OceanGate company together with Stockton Rush, who died on Titan, but withdrew from it in 2013, remaining a minority shareholder.

Soehnlein added that the members of the expedition were aware of the risks of the journey. “Those in our community who work at this depth know that it is always a risk. The pressure down there is so intense that if damage occurs, it is immediate and catastrophic. And we all know that there is a risk,’ he said.

Soehnlein: Rush was not a ‘risk-taker’

At the same time, he defended the experimental design of a boat built of titanium and carbon fiber, which employees and experts had previously raised concerns about.

He stated that the head of the Rush company was not a “risk-taker”, but a “risk manager”, and he himself would go on an expedition to the wreck of the Titanic if he could. “We don’t know anything until we finish our investigation and all the data is collected, so I’ll reserve judgment,” he said.
