The US president spoke to a 16-year-old black boy who was shot in the head in Kansas City after he made a mistake and knocked on the wrong door. The man who attacked the boy has been charged.

President of the USA Joe Biden spoke with Ralph Yarl, a black 16-year-old who was shot in the head in Kansas City after knocking on the wrong door, the White House said.

“No parent should worry about their child getting shot after pressing the wrong doorbell. We must keep up the fight against gun violence,” Biden tweeted after speaking to a high school student and his family.

Yarl was released from hospital three days on Sunday after being shot twice – in the head and shoulder – by an 84-year-old homeowner who knocked on the door by mistake to pick up his brothers from a neighbor’s house.

The 84-year-old was temporarily detained on Tuesday and charged with first-degree assault. The man explained that he was afraid that a tall 16-year-old boy wanted to break into his house.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said Yarl was the victim of one of a number of high-profile incidents of gun violence in recent days. The spokeswoman recalled shooting at a teenage birthday party in Dadeville, Alabama, and the murder of a 20-year-old woman in upstate New York, shot after she mistakenly pulled into the driveway of the wrong house.
