Rapper Young Dolph was shot dead in Memphis, Tennessee on Wednesday, local officials said. The attack took place in a confectionery shop where he often came to shop.

Memphis police said on Twitter that there is no information about the murder at Makeda’s Cookies, located near the city’s international airport.

The artist’s cousin, Mareno Myers, told the local daily The Daily Memphian that the 36-year-old rapper had come to Memphis on Monday to visit his aunt with cancer. “He was inside Makeda’s when someone suddenly pulled up and shot him,” Myers said.

Last week, the patisserie posted a video on Instagram in which the rapper advertised her products, saying that he always visits her when he is in Memphis.

Reactions to the death of Young Dolph

On the news of the artist’s death, a crowd of his fans gathered in front of the confectionery. Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said in a published statement that “this tragic homicide is once again a reminder of the pain of criminal acts of violence.”

Young Dolph was born in Chicago but spent most of his life in Memphis. He was valued by hip hop fans for – as the Associated Press writes – his authenticity and independence.

The artist debuted in 2009 with the song “Paper Route Campaign”. He has recorded five solo albums, including “Rich Slave”, which rose to fourth place on the Billboard weekly charts. In 2016, he recorded the song “King of Memphis”, which paved his way to fame.
