Guests of Sunday’s “Fakty po Faktach” – Agnieszka Lichnerowicz from TOK FM radio, Jerzy Marek Nowakowski from the Euro-Atlantic Association, former Polish ambassador to Latvia and in Armenia, and Łukasz Pawłowski, sociologist, journalist of “Kultura Liberalna” and co-host of “American Podcast” – discussed the most important events of the past 2022 and how the 10-month-long war in Ukraine influenced changes in world politics.

Pawłowski: The United States once again played like the leader of the Western world

Pawłowski drew attention to the role of the United States. He said that in the last 12 months in the US you could find a lot of bad news, but “one of the most important, from our point of view, good news is that United States once again played like the leader of the Western world. “They showed not only their combat capabilities, but also their ability to support Ukraine and showed that they are the keystone that holds the entire security architecture of the West together,” he added. In his opinion, the US showed that “they are a partner, dependable and have shown a remarkable ability to build alliances and work with allies.”

– It was amazing how the Americans prepared both Ukrainians and us in Europe, sharing information from their intelligence that there could be an attack by Russia. It was extraordinary how President Biden also allowed allies and together with them, coordinate preparations for Putin’s attack and then maintain support for Ukraine, he continued.

As Pawłowski continued, “the worse news is that it does not have to be like this in the future.” – We are already entering a new balance of power on the American political scene with January, where Congress will be divided. The House of Representatives belongs to the Republicans, the Senate and the presidency to the Democrats.

Nowakowski: the concert of superpowers begins again

According to Jerzy Marek Nowakowski, “what has happened is the final end of the strategic pause that we have had since 1989.”

– We have a complete change of the political model. Again begins – unfortunately, this is not good news for us – a concert of superpowers. He mentioned here, among others, Americans, Chinese and Indians, who – as he said – “are a key player”. – Of course, there is also a chance for Europe if Europe catches up, and it seems to me – and this is good news – that it does – said the former Polish ambassador to Latvia and Armenia.

Nowakowski, speaking about the new concert of powers, also drew attention to the relationship between Russia and China.

He said recently Vladimir Putin talks with Chinese leader XI Jinping “was being taught by a good uncle to a naughty cousin.” – The Chinese place Russia in the position of a younger brother, and a younger brother in Chinese political language means a dependent state. The Russians are a little terrified of it, and they don’t have a good answer to it, Nowakowski continued.

Lichnerowicz: the need for change was shown by successive crises

Agnieszka Lichnerowicz said that “the need for change was shown by successive crises”. – Basically, since 2008 and the financial crisis, through the pandemic crisis, through the war since 2014 (after annexation of Crimea by Russia – ed.). We’ve had a lot of these crises over the last decades, and each time it was said that some things had to change. But the status quo, for various reasons, persisted. And now it has been seriously questioned in 2022 in many spheres, she added.

At the same time, she said that she had doubts about the direction of changes in European policy recently. – European Union she learned very painfully what it means to be economically, and thus politically, dependent on an authoritarian, despotic state like Russia, the journalist pointed out.

– Only that alternatives are sought primarily in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. We are not going full steam ahead for the transformation, for alternative energy sources that would give us sovereignty, greater climate security in the future, but we are looking for (this) in Saudi Arabia, which has perhaps even greater crimes on its conscience than Russia, when it comes to Yemen. Here I have doubts whether there is any reflection that even values in international politics matter – said Lichnerowicz.
