Adrienne Watson, spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council, said in a statement that “Russia's nuclear rhetoric has been reckless and irresponsible throughout the conflict.”

Putin on the possible use of nuclear weapons

Putin gave an interview to the RIA agency and Rossiya 1 television. He was asked, among other things, whether Russia was prepared for the possibility of a nuclear war. – From a technical point of view, of course, we are prepared, he said. He added that Russia would be ready to use such weapons if its sovereignty was threatened.

He argued that the US is aware that by sending its troops to Russia or Ukraine, the Kremlin will treat it as an intervention. – There are many experts in the United States on strategic restraint in relations with Russia. Therefore, it is not the case that everything is heading towards a nuclear conflict, but we are ready for it, he added.

Putin emphasized that the Kremlin has its own nuclear doctrine, which specifies exactly when and in what situations Russia may use such weapons. – Weapons exist to be used, but we have our own rules – he said and announced that if the US conducts nuclear tests, Russia will respond in the same way.
