Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents entered the Washington property of Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska on Tuesday, NBC News reported. The purpose of the search is not known so far. Photos from the scene show federal agents clearing boxes from the villa. The property was surrounded with police tape.

As reported by NBC News, although the FBI has confirmed that it is operating in a Washington house linked to Oleg Deripaska, no more details have been released. In 2017, the Washington Post determined that the villa in the prestigious Northeast of Washington was owned by a Russian oligarch who bought it in 2006 for $ 15 million through a Delaware-based substitute company.

The Reuters Agency reported that a house linked to Deripaska was surrounded by police tape. FBI officials stood outside the property while other federal agents carried packed boxes from the house.

Who is Oleg Deripaska?

Deripaska is an aluminum magnate with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2018, it was subject to US sanctions. The American Ministry of Finance, which imposed the restrictions, then announced in a statement that an investigation was underway against the oligarch concerning, inter alia, money laundering and he is accused of extortion and organized crime.

The New York Post reported at the time that sanctions had frozen US assets of the billionaire, including properties in Washington and New York. In 2019, the US authorities lifted sanctions against his companies Rusal and En + after Deripaska divested some of its shares in those companies.

NBC reports that Deripaska was also banned from entering the US, but this changed after the Russian authorities granted him a diplomatic passport.
