Police in Denver, Colorado, are searching for a local school student who shot and wounded two teachers who were checking for guns as part of a “safety plan,” local officials said. Two people injured in the attack were taken to the hospital, one was in a critical condition. The other is in a serious but stable condition, police said.

Austin Lyle, 17, a Denver high school student shot and killed two school employees who were checking for weapons.

Shots were fired around 10 a.m. Wednesday, which is around 5 p.m. Polish time. The teenager fled on foot from the scene of the attack, the services informed. “There was a ‘security plan’ for this particular student, which consisted of daily searches,” Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas told reporters.

Neither the police nor the education authorities have disclosed the specific behavior that prompted the school to adopt an individual safety protocol for this particular student.

Two people injured, one in critical condition

Two people injured in the attack were transported to a local hospital, one of them in critical condition. The other is in a serious but stable condition, Ron Thomas said.

The shots came nearly three years after the Denver school board voted to eliminate a program to assign armed police officers to public school campuses, relying on the school district’s own security team.

Due to this incident, two police officers will be assigned to the facility by the end of the school year, said district superintendent Alex Marrero. All classes at the school where the attack took place were also canceled for the rest of the week.
