Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gwir’s visit to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem has the potential to increase tensions and provoke violence, State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Tuesday. The White House also spoke in a similar vein.

“This visit has the potential to increase and provoke violence … We are deeply concerned about any unilateral action because of the potential to inflame tensions or worse,” Price said at a press briefing.

In this way, he commented on Tuesday’s visit of the far-right minister of internal security to the new government Israel, Itamar Ben-Gwira on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, where there is, among others, Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of the most important Muslim shrines in the world.

Price also summoned the new Israeli prime minister’s government Benjamin Netanyahu to deliver on its programmatic promises to maintain the historic status quo of sites sacred to both religions.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre spoke in a similar tone. ‘Any unilateral action that jeopardizes the status quo is unacceptable and we will continue to stand firm and clear on this position,’ she stressed.

Israel wants to mediate in talks between Kiev and Moscow

During Tuesday’s conference, a spokesman for the State Department also referred to signals being sent by the new government in Israel about its willingness to mediate talks between Russia and Ukraine. Price admitted that Israel’s relationship with Russia is different than that USA with Russia and assessed that it was “okay”.

– What is much more important to us, apart from the communication itself, is the nature of the signals that are transmitted. And if any state has the ability to help end Russia’s brutal aggression, that is something we would welcome, as long as the terms are acceptable to Ukraine – he said.
