US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke on Thursday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Delhi, India. A spokesman for the U.S. State Department admitted that the United States did not anticipate further talks.
– We do not anticipate further high-level talks with representatives in the near future Russia US State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Thursday. “We will always be open to dialogue, especially diplomacy in times of tension and the current relationship between our countries,” Price added at a press conference.
Blinken meeting with Lavrov
The spokesman’s words came after the US Secretary of State on Thursday Anthony Blinken was talking to the boss Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of a meeting of foreign ministers G20 countries in Indian Delhi. It was the first meeting between the two diplomats since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
Blinken told journalists that in a conversation with Lavrov he urged Russia to “retract its irresponsible decision” on the US-Russia New START strategic arms reduction agreement, because it is in the interest of both the US and Russia to respect it by both parties to the treaty.
The chief of American diplomacy said that he also called on Russia to end it war in Ukraine and “engage in real diplomacy that can lead to a just and lasting peace.”
