A nor’easter hit the northeastern United States on Monday. This is characteristic of this region storm, driven by strong gusts of north-eastern wind. It brings gusty winds and intense precipitation – rain or snow, depending on the season.

According to the US National Weather Service (NWS), by Tuesday morning the most snow, over 38 centimeters, had fallen in Shohola, Pennsylvania. Significant rainfall was also recorded in the states of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.

They forecast the heaviest snowfall in years

Snowfall and strong wind gusts brought significant disruptions to over 30 million Americans. On Tuesday morning, winter weather alerts were in effect in the area from West Virginia to New England – these states are more than 1,000 kilometers apart.

In New York, Tuesday may bring the heaviest snowfall in years. For almost two years, not a centimeter of snow fell in the metropolis, and the snowless period ended only in mid-January this year, when 3.5 cm fell in Central Park in Manhattan. According to forecasts, up to 15 cm may fall there by Tuesday evening, and up to 30 cm in other parts of the state. The storm is also raging over other metropolises, including Boston and Philadelphia.

Difficult weather conditions caused communication difficulties. At least a thousand flights were canceled due to the storm. The situation on the roads is also difficult: in some regions, snow plows cannot keep up with clearing the road surface, and visibility is also limited. The Connecticut Department of Transportation asked drivers to refrain from traveling if possible.

The violent weather prompted local authorities to cancel school classes or conduct them remotely. Students from New York State, Boston, Newark, New Jersey, and New Haven, Connecticut, stayed at home. In the latter state, some offices were also closed.

According to PowerOutage.us, snowstorms caused power outages for over 140,000 customers, mainly in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. However, the number of failures may increase. Difficult weather conditions are expected to accompany residents of the United States at least until Tuesday evening.
