There are bad days when I can’t get out of bed,” Abigail Zwerner, 25, a teacher who was shot by a six-year-old student in Virginia in January, told NBC News. More than two months after this event, the woman gave her first interview.

Abigail Zwerner was shot on January 6 at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News. During a break between classes, a 6-year-old student took a gun from his backpack and fired at the 25-year-old teacher, hitting her in the chest and arm. The woman suffered life-threatening injuries, but doctors were able to save her.

Two and a half months later, on March 20, Abigail Zwerner gave her first interview to NBC News since the incident. “I’m doing fine, although it’s difficult,” the 25-year-old admitted. There are bad days when I can’t get out of bed. There are also better days when I can get out of it and manage to fulfill my duties. But after going through what I’ve been through, I try to keep a positive attitude,” she added.

During the conversation, Zwerner had a bandage on her left hand, in which she was injured. As she explained, she had already undergone four operations on this part of the body after being shot. However, the hand still has not fully recovered, which makes the simplest activities, such as opening a bottle of water or putting on clothes, a great challenge for the teacher. The woman pointed out that doctors are not sure if her left arm will ever be as functional as it was before the accident.

The teacher also told about the course of rehabilitation. – It is exhausting not only physically, but also mentally. I am to move my fingers once an hour to stimulate blood circulation and restore normal movements, Zwerner explained.

A 6-year-old shot a teacher

In late January, The Washington Post reported that before Zwerner was shot she reported the boy’s misbehavior to the school authorities and asked for help. The child had threaten to set her on fire. According to the newspaper, however, the school disregarded the 25-year-old teacher’s complaints. Also on the day of the incident, the facility authorities were to receive information that the boy had brought a gun with him. His backpack was reportedly searched, but the gun was not found.

After the teacher was shot, the six-year-old was disarmed by another school employee, and the policemen who arrived on the spot took the child to the detention center. The prosecutor’s office later announced that the boy would not be prosecuted for his actions.
