A speeding Tesla car left the road on a bend and fell off a coastal cliff in California, local services reported on Tuesday. Four people traveling in it survived the fall on the coastal rocks located about 80 meters below and were transported to the hospital. “The fact that they survived is a real miracle,” admitted one of the firefighters participating in the rescue operation.

Rescuers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) unit reported that the incident happened on January 2 before noon (local time) on a coastal highway in San Mateo County, California. A Tesla car on a sharp bend left the road and fell off a cliff on a promontory called Devil’s Slide. Photos from the scene show that the car crashed into the rocks about 80 meters below.

There were four people in the car – two adults and two children. It took the services about an hour and a half to reach this hard-to-reach place. The CHP explained that the children were pulled out of the vehicle first, with the adults still trapped in the crashed car. Eventually, all the victims were extracted from the wreckage of the vehicle and transported to the hospital by rescue helicopters.

An accident in California. Tesla fell off a cliff

Initially, the services reported that all four were in a critical condition. A few hours later, however, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said none of the people injured were in danger and no children were seriously injured. “Unfortunately, we come here quite often for accidents like this. The fact that they survived is a real miracle,” Brian Pottenger, one of the firefighters who worked at the scene, summed up in an interview with KTVU television.

Preliminary investigations show that at the time of the accident tesla was not in autopilot mode, which has caused accidents in the past cars of this brand. There is no indication that poor road conditions were the cause of the accident. A witness to the crash, quoted by NBC News, said the car was moving “extremely fast” moments before it went off the road.
