Plastic surgeon Geoffrey Kim has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of an 18-year-old patient during a 2019 breast augmentation operation. After anesthesia, the girl fell into a coma and went into cardiac arrest, but the doctor did not call an ambulance for five hours. Nor did he allow his clinic staff to call for help.

Plastic surgeon Geoffrey Kim, 54, was sentenced Wednesday by the District Court of Arapahoe County, Colorado (USA) for the involuntary manslaughter of 18-year-old Emmalyn Nguyen, who fell into a coma while undergoing breast augmentation surgery. The patient died several months later. The doctor was also found guilty of obstructing access to telephone services for refusing to allow clinic staff to call an ambulance for the girl. The man faces up to three years in prison. The verdict will be handed down on September 8.

The incident took place on August 1, 2019. Emmalyn Nguyen, then 18, arrived for a breast augmentation at the Colorado Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery clinic in Greenfield Village near Denver, which was owned by Kim. According to a press release from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, the woman fell into a coma after being given anesthesia and died 14 months later.

During the trial, anesthesiologist Rex Meeker testified that he had suggested to the surgeon that the patient needed immediate medical attention at the hospital and that an ambulance should be called. Investigators found that although the 18-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest, Kim waited five hours before calling for help. Many clinic staff, including two nurses, asked permission to call 911, but the surgeon refused to do so, prosecutors said.

The 54-year-old’s defense blamed the anesthesiologist for the girl’s death. According to the Denver Post, they believe Meeker gave the girl a mixture of dangerous drugs and an overdose of fentanyl. The anesthesiologist was also charged at the beginning of the trial, but in September the prosecutor’s office discontinued the proceedings against him.

“We are aware that medical procedures do not always go according to plan, but the accused showed a shocking and extreme lack of judgment and humanity by not calling an ambulance and denying his patient appropriate treatment at the hospital,” the deputy prosecutor said. district attorney Gary Dawson in a statement. “The accused made decisions based on what was best for his company, not for the patient,” he stressed.
