Three officers were injured when a garbage truck exploded in the suburbs of Chicago, local police say. Authorities are investigating the causes of the explosion and are releasing a video of the incident.

Police in Arlington Heights, Illinois, reported the incident on Tuesday. On the afternoon of December 6, officers received a call about a fire in a garbage truck. Shortly after their arrival, the vehicle exploded. The recording from a camera in a policeman's uniform, published on Tuesday, shows that the explosion occurred when a firefighter was connecting a hose to a hydrant.

Two policemen and a firefighter were injured in the explosion. In Tuesday's statement, police thanked Arlington Heights residents for their “support” for the injured officers, saying that two of the injured were “recovering at home” and that the firefighter was now back on duty.

The explosion also damaged buildings in the area. NBC 5 Chicago reports that parts of roofs and facades were torn off and that windows in “many houses” were damaged.

Police said Tuesday that the cause of the fire and explosion is currently under investigation. Preliminary findings show that a fire broke out in the compartment of the garbage truck, which ignited the compressed natural gas (CNG) tank.
