A group of seven-year-olds from the US state of Maryland found a box filled with “something blue” they thought was candy. Three children complained of dizziness after eating an unknown substance and were hospitalized, ABC News reports. The investigation revealed that the alleged “candy” was in fact a drug linked to methamphetamine.

The incident took place on April 17 at an elementary school in the city of Rockville, located near Washington. According to ABC News, citing information from the Montgomery County police, three 7-year-old students came to the nurse that day complaining of dizziness. An ambulance was immediately called to the school. The children were taken to the hospital as a precaution. There is no information that any of them suffered serious damage. “The investigation revealed that a group of schoolchildren found a box of something blue they thought was candy,” local officials said. ABC News said it was unclear whether the children found the box on school grounds or elsewhere.

Maryland. Methamphetamine in “candy”

Officers were unable to find any of the alleged “candies”, but “based on the victims’ toxicology tests, investigators believe the blue items were a drug related to methamphetamine,” police said. “I’m relieved that the students will be okay.” What happened, however, is terrifying for many reasons. I hope that this situation will motivate parents to talk to their children about the dangers of taking or eating unknown substances, said Marcus Jones, the chief of the local police, quoted by ABC News.

The portal reports that children who accidentally took the drug have already been discharged from the hospital. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
