Teacher Abby Zwerner, who was shot by a six-year-old student in class in January, no longer works at the Newport News school. According to her lawyer, she was fired because she filed a lawsuit against the school district. However, his representatives claim that the woman resigned from her job.

On Tuesday, the lawyer for 25-year-old Abby Zwerner, who was shot by a six-year-old student earlier this year, told local station WAVY News 10 that the teacher had been fired. In response to this allegation, the Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) school district in Virginia denied the assertion. It was reported that the woman herself resigned from her position.

Jeffrey Breit, the 25-year-old’s attorney, told WAVY News 10 that Zwerner had been fired by the school and had not been paid her salary since February. According to him, the school is trying to “put pressure on her” after the woman filed a lawsuit against the school seeking $40 million in damages for negligence and allowing the January incident. “They’re trying to squeeze her,” he said. “The only thing I can think of is that they are trying to put pressure on her because we filed a lawsuit. It’s outrageous,” he said.

He also quoted an e-mail that Zwerner received from the school in May, in which it was written that the institution “considered the application to terminate the employment contract with effect at the end of June 12, 2023.” According to him, “you can’t read it otherwise than as information about the release.”

In response to Breit’s words, the school district issued a statement on Tuesday denying Breit’s claims. As emphasized, every employee who leaves their job receives a message with similar content. It was reported that Zwerner resigned on March 13 with information that she wanted to leave on June 12, and Monday was her last day at work.

The student shot the teacher

Zwerner was shot in a classroom at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, on January 6. The six-year-old fired a pistol at the teacher, wounding her in the chest and hand. The doctors managed to save her life. Almost three months after the incident, the woman filed a lawsuit in Newport News District Court. It demands USD 40 million (approx. PLN 170 million) in damagesaccusing school officials of disregarding warnings from staff and students that the boy was carrying a gun and posed an “imminent threat” on the day of the attack, and had a “history of accidental violence.”

The boy’s mother, Deja Taylor, was charged in the case. According to the prosecutor’s office, the weapon in her possession was not secured in any way. In April, she was accused of neglecting a child and recklessly leaving a loaded gun at risk. On Monday, the woman pleaded guilty to using marijuana, which is illegal in Virginia, and to lying about using it to buy a gun.
