The parents of Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich held in a Russian prison gave an interview a year after their son was arrested on espionage charges. – We know that the US government takes Evan's case very seriously. I think if you allow for pessimism, the game is over. And he (Evan – ed.) tells us that he is struggling, said the reporter's mother, Ella Milman.

American journalist Evan Gershkovich was arrested on March 29, 2023 in Yekaterinburg, Russia, on charges of espionage. The 32-year-old, who worked as a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, pleaded not guilty and faces 20 years in prison. On Monday, less than a year after Gershkovich's arrest, his parents gave an interview to ABC. – We know that the US government takes Evan's case very seriously. I think if you allow for pessimism, the game is over. And he (Evan -ed.) tells us that he is struggling, said the journalist's mother, Ella Milman. At the beginning of March, the correspondent's parents listened to Joe Biden's State of the Union address as special guests. The US president then stated that the White House administration was “working around the clock to bring Evan home.” The correspondent's father, Mikhail Gershkovich, said he appreciated these efforts. “We are confident that the White House is doing everything it can, and we want it to continue to do so,” he said. -We're still holding together. President Biden's promise was given to us personally and as part of the State of the Union address, added Ella Milman. The editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal, Emma Tucker, also participated in the interview. – Evan will be freed, but achieving this goal is not easy. Many different people and governments are involved in this matter. I think we just have to be patient and optimistic, she said. Evan Gershkovich's parents said they still write letters to their son and have contact with him thanks to Lynne Tracy, the US ambassador to Russia. – He remembers his friends' birthdays. On March 8, we received flowers from him on Women's Day, said Milman.

Gershkovich is the first American correspondent since the Cold War to be detained for alleged espionage. “WSJ” firmly denies that Evan Gershkovich is a spy. The journalist pleaded not guilty during a closed court hearing. He stayed in Russia on a journalist's visa and had press accreditation issued by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The US administration also firmly denies the allegations against the 32-year-old; the White House press secretary called them “ridiculous.”
