The Pentagon has concluded a preliminary agreement with the armaments concern Lockheed Martin on the delivery of 375 F-35 fighters to the US armed forces within three years.
– We are pleased to announce that Pentagon and Lockheed Martin have reached an agreement to purchase another 375 F-35 fighters, Defense representative William LaPlante said on Monday.
So far, Reuters points out, it is a “gentleman’s” deal, and its value is estimated at $ 30 billion. The announced declaration is the starting point for an accurate contract valuation and placing an order.
The most popular version of Lockheed Martin fighters is the F-35A. The first such plane cost $ 221 million when it rolled off the production line in 2007. Since then, the production and demand for these machines has increased, bringing the price of the fifth-generation “invisible” fighter to $ 79 million apiece.
The Pentagon has announced that the final number of aircraft delivered under the contract may change. Recently, in 2019, the US Ministry of Defense purchased 478 F-35 fighters. Lockheed Martin’s other potential customers are Greece and the Czech Republic – writes the Reuters agency.
