Alicia Moore, 24, was arrested and charged after leaving her two children in a car in the parking lot of Dillard’s Oviedo Mall while she allegedly shoplifted. Her car burst into flames, leaving one of her children with first-degree burns.

A report published last Thursday on the Oviedo Police Department website describes that Alica Moore parked her car in the parking lot of Dillard’s Oviedo Mall around noon on May 26. The 24-year-old left her two children in it (their age was kept secret in the report) and headed towards the shopping mall. There, according to the surveillance recordings, she and an unidentified man were allegedly stealing goods for almost an hour. According to police documents, when leaving the shopping center, Moore noticed that her car was on fire, she allegedly dropped the stolen items and fled the scene. “Fortunately, residents of Oviedo, who were shopping in the shopping mall, noticed the fire and the children trying to get out of the vehicle,” the report said, noting that it was the witnesses of the incident that helped the Moore children get out of the burning car.

The children, left by their mother, were taken to the nearby Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital. One of them suffered first-degree burns to the face and ears as a result of the incident. The 24-year-old’s car is damaged, police said.

Later that same day, Alicia Moore was arrested by officers in neighboring Orlando, based on earlier arrest warrants unrelated to the May 26 incident. She was charged with child neglect and arson. While the cause of the fire is unknown, the second allegation is that negligence contributed to the injuries to the children, and that “the fire occurred while Moore was committing a crime”. The 24-year-old also heard four other charges related to petty theft, battery and assault, which she allegedly committed in the past. She is currently in the Orange County Jail, which she can leave after paying bail. Moore pleads not guilty.
