The U.S. House of Representatives passed a new provisional budget on Thursday that extends the expiration date for funding for federal agencies by another week. A resolution on this matter still needs to be passed by the Senate, which may do so on Thursday night. This may help you avoid a shutdown.

The resolution, intended to give an additional week to adopt the budget and avoid paralysis of the work of some federal agencies, passed the House with cross-party support, by a vote of 320-99.

Financing for some ministries and agencies

The interim provision – the fourth since the expiration of the previous year’s budget at the end of September – provides funding for some ministries and agencies – including the departments of Veterans Affairs, Energy, Construction and Military Construction until March 8, and the rest of them – until March 22.

By then, lawmakers hope to finalize negotiations on the shape of 12 bills that are to constitute the full year-round state budget.

Time for the Senate

In order to avoid a partial shutdown that is harmful to the economy, the provisional bill must also be voted on by the Senate and signed by the president by the end of Friday. Party leaders in the Senate intend to do it on Thursday night, but the consent of all 100 senators is needed for accelerated consideration of the legislation.

The state functions were closed down in USA many times, but most often the paralysis lasted several days. The longest one occurred during his presidency Donald Trump in 2018 – lasted 34 days.
