Scooter, a 7-year-old Chinese Crested Dog, was the winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog 2023 competition. Also on the podium were Wild Thang, a 7-year-old Pekingese, and Harold Bartholomew, a 16-year-old Chihuahua. The event aims to show how exceptionally beautiful its participants are.

On Friday in the city of Petaluma, California, this year’s edition of the competition for the world’s ugliest dog was settled. Organized for nearly 50 years, the event aims – by celebrating “imperfections that make all dogs unique” – to show the unique beauty of its participants, as well as to promote adoption. This year, the title of the world’s ugliest dog was awarded to a 7-year-old Chinese crested named Scooter. According to jury member Catherine Liang, “it resembles a hairy hippo in the sweetest way possible.” “When he places his hairless little ass and hind legs in your lap, you’ll feel his warm, cuddly power that changes the meaning of the word ugly,” judge Gadi Schwartz told Today.

Scooter was born with deformed hind legs – inform the organizers of the competition for the ugliest dog in the world. The owner of the kennel where he was born wanted to put him to sleep because of this. In the facility where the man went for this purpose, he met one of the volunteers of the organization Saving Animals from Euthanasia, who “knew that this puppy could have a chance to find a good home and a fairly normal life (…) and took him from home with you.”

Scooter’s disability doesn’t stop him from moving around. “It walks on its front legs. Swaying from side to side, it overcomes various obstacles – stones, curbs and steps.” Recently, thanks to the help of volunteers, Scooter received a special stroller to help him move around. Now the 7-year-old dog “loves going to the park.”

Next to Scooter on the podium of the competition stood: 7-year-old Pekingese Wild Thang and 16-year-old chihuahua named Harold Bartholomew. The runner-up got distemper as a pup, which left him toothless. Harold’s story is also not the happiest. Last year, the blind and deaf dog was found by members of the organization Underdog Rescue while wandering alone in one of the parks in Antioch, California.

There is also an audience award as part of the competition. This year, the award went to a dog named Rascal Deux – a nine-time winner of other competitions for the ugliest dog. The organizers of the event emphasize that it is not intended to make fun of “ugly dogs”, but to “have fun (…) and show the world that (its participants) are really beautiful animals.”
