Due to a powerful winter storm, nearly five thousand flights were canceled Friday and night from Friday to Saturday in the United States. This was reported by the website, FlightAware, which monitors the aviation industry.

Most flights were canceled on the East Coast, where airports prepared for high winds and up to 70 cm of snowfall in some regions.

“Due to the expected storm, Boston Logan and airports along the East Coast could experience delays and cancellations on Saturday and Sunday,” the airport warned on Twitter.

Warwick International Airport in Rhode Island was more optimistic about snow removal. It said on Twitter that crews “will work tirelessly to keep the runways clean and safe.”

The governors of New York, New Jersey, and Virginia have declared a state of emergency. The snowstorm called by meteorologists “powerful and dangerous” was supposed to cover the swathes of the middle Atlantic, the north-east and New England. There have been warnings of “treacherous travel conditions and the possibility of widespread breakdowns leading to disruptions in electricity supplies.”

“In some areas of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, snowfall can be as high as 70 cm, and it is possible that even more snow may fall in certain areas,” the Boston meteorological office reported. Traveling will be dangerous or almost impossible, it added on Saturday, the New York Times reported.

The daily noted that 15 to 25 cm of snow is expected in New York and the Mid-Hudson region, and up to nearly 40 cm on Long Island.
