Kentucky joins more than 20 US states that have banned TikTok from being installed on government devices. The authorities decided to take this step due to concerns about cybersecurity.

On Thursday, orders banning TikTok on government devices were signed by the governors of Wisconsin and North Carolina. The states of Ohio, New Jersey and Arkansas also took such action earlier this week. Some states have taken broader action than just targeting TikTok. For example, New Jersey and Wisconsin have also banned products and services from other Chinese companies, including Huawei Technologies, Hikvision, Tencent Holdings – the owner of WeChat, ZTE Corp, as well as Russia’s Kaspersky Lab.

US TikTok Restrictions

Last month, the president of the United States Joe Biden signed the Government Funding Act, which included a ban on federal employees using or downloading TikTok on government-owned devices.

The law gives the White House administration 60 days to “develop standards and guidelines for executive agencies requiring removal” of TikTok from federal devices, Reuters explained.

The idea to ban TikTok on government devices gained traction after FBI Director Christopher Wray said in November that the app posed a threat to national security. Wray drew attention to the threat that the Chinese government could use the app to influence users or control their devices, Reuters pointed out.

On January 6, the agency reported that TikTok had halted the process of hiring consultants to help it implement a potential security deal with the United States, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters. The decision was because most US officials oppose such a deal.

TikTok has been trying to reassure Washington for three years that it has no access to citizens’ personal information USAand their content cannot be manipulated by the Communist Party China nor any other entity under Beijing’s influence, Reuters reported.
