Heat flooded Minnesota on Sunday. Forecasts indicated that in places the temperature would be 13 degrees Celsius higher than usual for this time of year. Because of this, organizers of the annual Twin Cities Marathon had to cancel part of the event.

The Twin Cities Marathon is an annual sporting event held in the greater Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota area. It is usually held on the first weekend of October. However, this year the Sunday run was canceled due to extremely high temperatures that could pose a threat to the lives and health of participants.

“We’re sorry we have to make this decision, but we know it’s the right one,” Charlie Mahler, communications manager and race organizer, told CNN.

According to forecasts from the US National Weather Service (NWS), thermometers were supposed to show as much as 32 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Meanwhile, the average temperature at this time of year for the agglomeration is 18.8 degrees Celsius.

On Saturday evening, the marathon took place without any problems. The second part of the event was to start on Sunday at 7 a.m. local time. The organizers estimated that it could attract over 300,000 people.

“The latest update of the weather forecast predicts record heat, which does not allow for a safe event for runners, fans and volunteers,” the organizers said in a statement on Sunday. “The safety of participants and spectators will always be our top priority. Extreme heat can burden both runners and our emergency medical systems,” it added.

Mahler said that the organizers had been closely following meteorologists’ predictions for several days, but the temperature forecast for Sunday was still rising. Therefore, the decision turned out to be necessary.

– During the night, the temperature forecast worsened even more and that’s why we had to cancel the second part of the event early in the morning – he explained. – Marathon participants experience a wide range of emotions. Some people were certainly relieved that we made the decision to participate for them. I also think there are those who thought they could run even in these difficult conditions, he said.
