Police have released new facts about an incident on Friday that shocked the people of Virginia. A six-year-old boy shot his teacher in the classroom. The chief of the local police released new details about the incident on Monday.

The shot was fired on the afternoon of Friday January 6 at Richneck School in Newport News. According to the BBC, the incident happened between classes after an argument between 25-year-old teacher Abby Zwerner and a six-year-old first-year student. None of the children in the room were injured. The woman was shot in the chest and suffered life-threatening injuries. In the late afternoon, the AP reported that her condition had improved. Zwerner is still in the hospital.

Virginia. New information on school shooting

Police said on the day of the incident that the shooting “was not accidental”. On Monday, Steve Drew, the chief of local officers, provided new information on the matter. He noted that the altercation he had spoken of earlier was purely verbal, there was no physical contact between the teacher and the six-year-old. After injuring the teacher, the boy was overpowered by a school employee who ran into the classroom when he heard the shot. The child was still “warlike”, about to hit the man. Police officers arrived at the scene and took the six-year-old to jail.

Drew stressed that the teacher who was shot “acted heroically”. Despite her injuries, she made sure that all the children in the class were evacuated. The recording from the school camera, which was watched by the police, shows that she was the last to leave the room herself.

Where did the boy get the gun from?

According to the investigators, the 9-millimeter pistol from which the shot was fired was taken by the boy from home and brought in a backpack to school. The owner of the gun is his mother, police said. “Today we know that (mother – ed.) gave instructions. (Boy – ed.) pulled out a gun, aimed and fired a bullet.”

The woman faces criminal liability – according to Virginia law, the owner of a gun cannot leave it unsecured if it poses a threat to the life or health of a person under 14 years of age. Violation of this law is a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment of up to one year and a fine of up to $2,500.

The Sky News portal emphasizes that the law in Virginia is liberal in this respect anyway, the state regulations do not specify exactly how the firearms should be stored.

Lawyers contacted by the portal explain that theoretically a six-year-old could face charges. However, there would be so many obstacles in such a case that it is rather unrealistic for any prosecutor to undertake it. “It is practically impossible to imagine that a six-year-old would be considered a person capable of being a party to a lawsuit,” Prof. Andrew Block from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Access to guns in the US

According to the Small Arms Survey, Americans keep a total of 393.3 million firearms in their homes (data from 2018). A study conducted two years later by the Gallup Institute indicates that as many as 44 percent. of US adults own a firearm. As a result of being shot at USA over 20,000 people died in 2022, over 38.3 thousand people were injured.
