Unknown cases destroyed two murals depicting the legendary players of Widzew Łódź. One of them presented the figure of Włodzimierz Smolarek, and the other footballers who won the first Polish championship for Widzew in 1981. The club condemned the vandalism and said both murals would be repainted. The police are investigating.

The incident happened on the night of Thursday to Friday. Unknown perpetrators poured black paint on murals on the walls of blocks of flats in the immediate vicinity of the Widzew stadium. The first of them presented the legendary striker of the club and the Polish national team, Włodzimierz Smolarek. The second, the players who won the first Polish championship for Widzew in 1981.

The club condemns the act of vandalism and announces that the murals will be repainted

Widzew Łódź spokesman Marcin Tarociński said in an interview with tvn24.pl that the club condemns the act of vandalism, and the relevant services are already dealing with the matter. Widzew also referred to the case on social media. “We are outraged by the destruction of two historical murals, which were created thanks to the cooperation of sponsors and residents of the estate. Both will be repainted together with the fans, and at the same time we would like to inform you that we will expand our Mural Gallery as planned,” reads the statement of the club from Łódź.

Police: We are investigating the case

– Due to the damage to the facade of the buildings, we are conducting activities in this matter. We will strive to receive a notification of a committed crime. Police activities are underway on the spot – Commissioner Marcin Fiedukowicz from the Municipal Police Headquarters in Łódź informed us. The act of vandalism was condemned in social media by the city of Łódź. “It’s hard to describe such behavior in a cultural way. There is no and will not be our consent to acts of vandalism in the city,” we read on the official Facebook profile of the city.

The mural with Widzew players from 1981 was created in 2021, on the 40th anniversary of winning the first national championship by the club from Łódź. The painting commemorating Smolarek was unveiled last year. It presents a large-size portrait of the striker who died eleven years ago and his back turned silhouette in a football kit with the number 11, with which he played in the team from Łódź and the national team.
