The Secretary of State of the Holy See stated that for a just peace to prevail in Ukraine, it is necessary to “recognize mutual rights and also mutual obligations”. These words were criticized by politicians from the Italian Radicals party. There can be no reciprocity between the attacked and the aggressor, they emphasized.

In an interview with RAI television, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin spoke, among other things, about the mission of the pope’s envoy for Ukraine Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, who was in Moscow at the end of June.

Parolin criticized for words about Ukraine

These words were referred to by politicians from the leadership of the party Italian Radicals Massimiliano Iervolino, Igor Boni and Giulio Manfredi, who asked in a statement: “What does ‘mutual rights and mutual obligations’ mean?” “There can be no reciprocity between the attacked and the aggressor,” they stated in the issued note.

They added: “Ukraine has the right, the duty to defend itself against Russian aggression, but there is no reciprocity. Russia as an aggressor he has no right but only an obligation to withdraw and pay for the damage done, and Putin and the Russian command must be brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague for war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

The authors of the statement expressed the opinion that “Parolin’s unfortunate words confirm the ambiguity of the position the Vatican after Cardinal Zuppi’s unnecessary mission in Moscow.
