Vatican: Pope’s envoy finished visit to Kiev, its results will be useful

The Pope’s envoy for Ukraine, Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, has concluded a “short but intense visit to Kiev”. Its results will be useful to consider next steps, the Vatican announced on Tuesday. On the second day of the visit, the chairman of the Italian Bishops’ Conference met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

“The results of these conversations, including those with religious representatives, as well as the direct experience of the terrible suffering of the Ukrainian people due to the ongoing war, will be brought to the attention of the Holy Father and will undoubtedly be useful in considering further steps to be taken both at the humanitarian level and in search of paths to a just and lasting peace Vatican.

Parolin: Zuppi’s goal “to favor the climate”

Earlier, the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, explained that the immediate goal of Cardinal Zuppi’s mission is not mediation, but actions to “favor a climate” that can lead to peaceful ways to resolve the conflict. – The interlocutors for now will be Moscow and Kiev – he stressed. – Then we’ll see. We do not want to exclude anyone, added Cardinal Parolin.

It is not known whether Cardinal Zuppi will also go to Moscow for talks.
