Former apostolic nuncio to the US, Archbishop Carlo Mario Vigano – who has long been a sharp critic of Pope Francis – was accused of schism and for this reason summoned to the Vatican Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. “Archbishop Vigano has committed certain behaviors and must answer,” said Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Archbishop Vigano was the papal envoy in Washington from 2011 to 2016. In recent years, the priest – supported by some extremely conservative Catholic circles around the world, including v USA – he criticized the pontificate in the most severe way Pope Francis and appealed to him to resign.

Vigano on the X platform announced that he had been summoned to the Vatican Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith in person or through a canon lawyer on June 20. He also published the correspondence he received on this matter.

“I assume that the verdict is already ready, considering that it is an extrajudicial process,” he wrote. However, he did not say whether he was there alone or was represented by someone.

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith summoned Archbishop Vigano because – according to the published document – it wants to provide him with a document about the accusations against him and evidence of the “crime of schism”. Schism – a word coming from Greek and meaning tear, split, split – consists in conscious breaking away from obedience to the Pope as the head of the Church or in breaking away from the Church.

“Archbishop Vigano has committed certain behaviors and must answer. It is normal that the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith has taken up this situation and is investigating it,” said Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State. He added that Vigano was also given the opportunity to defend himself.

Possible penalties against Vigano could include removal from religious office or a ban from ministry.

He considers accusations of schism an “honor”

The Ansa agency quotes the words of the former nuncio, who considered the allegations an “honor”. As he stated, “no Catholic worthy of this name can be the Church of Bergoglio in unity.” The Holy Father's real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

The hierarch accused Francis of “breaking” with the teachings of “all popes in history and with the Church of Christ.”

According to Reuters, the archbishop went into hiding in 2018 – after conservative media published an 11-page statement in which he alleged that the pope had known for years about sexual harassment committed by the American cardinal and did nothing about it. Vatican He rejected the accusation of covering up the case.
