The Dutchman was summoned to see the stewards on Saturday morning when it emerged that he had handed Stroll within the second session after the pink flags have been introduced out for Lewis Hamilton’s stranded Mercedes.

Footage of the incident confirmed that Verstappen had been on a fast lap, with Stroll driving slowly, when he overtook the Aston Martin earlier than backing off instantly.

Following discussions with Verstappen and Crimson Bull’s sporting director Jonathan Wheatley, the FIA determined that whereas the Dutchman had handed Stroll, it was as a result of he was not conscious of the pink flag previous to that second.

A press release from the stewards mentioned: “The Race Administration System signifies that the pink flag and pink lights have been initiated at 15:10:12. When VER handed Mild Panel 14 (which is previous to the purpose of the overtake) it was not illuminated.

“As VER approached the rear of the automobile (inside a couple of metres) of STR, the pink mild on VER’s steering wheel activated.

“At this level VER’s pace was 260 km/h and STR’s was 110km/h, a delta of 150 km/h. At this level, telemetry exhibits that VER instantly lifted and braked.

“Due to the pace delta, VER’s momentum carried him previous STR. Concurrently the Mild Panel 15 (exhibiting pink) turned seen to VER. At roughly 15:10:17 the staff radioed VER “Crimson Flag”.

“It’s our conclusion that the motive force of Automobile 33 took each cheap motion to adjust to the rules in that he instantly lowered pace in a protected method on the earliest alternative upon the primary indication of the pink flag, even earlier than a pink flag or pink mild panel was seen to him, and that this satisfies the necessities of the Code (Artwork 2.5.4.1 b of Appendix H of the Worldwide Sporting Code).”

Had Verstappen been discovered responsible of breaching the principles, then it’s probably that he would have been handed a grid penalty for his house race at Zandvoort.
