Orban: I am the only person who can talk to everyone

On Friday, the Hungarian prime minister traveled to Moscow, three days after a surprise visit to Kiev, where he appeared for the first time since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In a conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky, he raised, among other things, the issue of a possible ceasefire and the start of peace talks.

– At the moment I am the only Western leader who can hold talks in Kiev and Moscow at the same time – assessed the Hungarian prime minister. – All the others have created a situation in which they cannot communicate directly with both sides, first of all with the Russians – added the politician.

– Regardless of the high political price I have to pay in Brussels, I am trying to do something because my country holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union and I am a person who can talk to everyone – he argued.

Orban has previously admitted that Hungary has no mandate to negotiate on behalf of the EU on wars in Ukrainehowever, stated that he wanted to explore the positions of both warring parties. According to the Prime Minister, he is preparing a report on this subject for members of the European Council.

In an interview with “Die Weltwoche” Orban noted that his trip to Moscow was prepared in the strictest secrecy, only after Tuesday's visit to Kiev had ended. Information about the meeting in Moscow leaked only when we asked for a flight over Poland – Orban stated.

Orban first met Putin in 2009, when the Hungarian politician was still in opposition. The last meeting before Friday's visit to Moscow took place in early February 2022, three weeks before Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
