Violent storm in Serbia. A tree crushed a car and a woman died

A woman died as a result of the storm that hit Serbia on Tuesday. In neighboring Croatia on the same day, strong winds knocked down trees by their roots, local media reported.

A resident of Sombor, located in northern Serbia, died in her car after a tree fell on it after being knocked down by hurricane winds, said Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Daczić.

– We call on citizens to exercise maximum caution in connection with stormsthat haunt Serbia – the politician appealed.

State of emergency, threat of flood

A state of emergency was declared in Novi Pazar in southern Serbia due to heavy rainfall and hail. Nihat Biszevac, the city's mayor, said that the water level in nearby rivers had risen to a level that could lead to flooding. The water also cut off some rural roads near the city.

Public broadcaster RTS reported that the storm was accompanied by hail the size of walnuts in some parts of the country. Some cities were deprived of electricity supplies due to the deterioration of the weather.

The Republican Hydrometeorological Institute raised the weather alert for some parts of Serbia to the highest, red level.

On the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, storms and heavy rainfall reached Belgard. The weather service warned of downpours in the Serbian capital.

Storms in Croatia

The weather also deteriorated rapidly in neighboring Croatia on Tuesday. As reported by N1 television, hurricane winds uprooted trees. There was also hail in parts of the country.
