50 planes that were scheduled to take off from Barcelona airport on Monday were canceled or delayed, and a dozen were diverted to other airports because of the downpour. The airport was partially flooded. Difficulties also affect railways in the Catalonia region.
A storm with heavy rain and hail passed over Barcelona and the surrounding area in northeastern Spain on Monday morning. 50 planes that were scheduled to land from El Prat airport in the morning were canceled or suffered significant delays, and 17 flights were redirected to other airports, the airport operator reported on the X website.
The airport was partially flooded. After a few hours it returned to normal operation.
During the downpour, 81 liters of water per square meter were recorded on the airport tarmac, the state meteorological agency AEMET reported.
Railway disruptions
Train passengers must also expect difficulties. The high-speed rail line between Barcelona and Tarragona has been suspended due to large amounts of water accumulating in the El Prat tunnel, Transport Minister Óscar Puente announced on social media.
Red alert in Barcelona
Barcelona was placed on a red weather alert, with lower level warnings issued for surrounding areas. In the Baix Llobregat area near Barcelona, more than 180 l/m2 may fall per day.
