One of the Kremlin’s fiercest critics, serving a 25-year sentence for criticizing the regime, was transferred to a Siberian penal colony. Vladimir Kara-Murza was put behind bars two years ago after calling Vladimir Putin’s rule a “regime of murderers.” According to observers, in this way Putin gets rid of anyone who dares to publicly criticize his power. CNN’s Matthew Chance spoke to the oppositionist’s wife.

Vladimir Kara-Murza was last seen in public in a courtroom. His prison uniform flashed with colors on the monitor in the room as he praised the attitude of those Russians who, like him, oppose the war in Ukraine.

The oppositionist is serving a 25-year prison sentence for criticizing the Kremlin. His wife tells CNN that Vladimir was suddenly transferred to a high-security penal colony. This is one of the harshest Siberian prisons. – Apparently, the reason for the transfer was that he was found to have consistently broken the rules of serving his sentence. An example of a violation was that he did not place the pillow correctly on the bed or did not button up his shirt, says Yevgeniya Kara-Murza.

This seems like a flimsy excuse. – I believe that they are doing everything to isolate those political prisoners who do not want to remain silent even behind bars. In this way, they try to intimidate others, says the oppositionist’s wife.

He opposed the Kremlin’s policy

For years, Kara-Murza was one of the Kremlin’s fiercest and bravest critics. CNN met the oppositionist in 2015, when he was recovering from what he described as intentional poisoning. Kara-Murza’s opposition to the Kremlin did not weaken – especially when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. – The regime that rules our country today is not only corrupt, kleptocratic and authoritarian, it is a regime of murderers – he said.

Kara-Murza is currently one of the key figures of the Russian opposition. The most famous is Alexei Navalny. Due to the increasingly repressive authorities, he was also thrown into prison.

Evgeniya Kara-Murza reports that she has heard from her husband only seven times since the verdict was passed. – The last conversation took place just before the New Year. It lasted 15 minutes. It was the first contact in half a year. I had to take the phone off after five minutes so that each of the three children could hear their father, says the woman.
