Ukraine can count on Polish support and Polish assistance, emphasized Donald Tusk after a conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky in Warsaw. He argued that “Independent, sovereign Ukraine, deciding its own fate, is not only obvious historical justice, but also indisputably a market for the security of Poland and all of Europe.” The Ukrainian leader stated that the next six months will be a time of joint work towards joining his country to the European Union. – The sooner Ukraine becomes a member of the European Union and NATO, the sooner we cooperate, the sooner we will all achieve the necessary stability, he said.

President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is in Warsaw. He has already met with the Prime Minister Donald Tuskafter which the leaders addressed a press conference.

– Mr. President, dear Volodymyr, dear friend, we recently met in… Lviv. Back then, one of the obvious conclusions of our meeting was your proposal to meet in Warsaw at the beginning of the Polish presidency of the European Union. This is an important moment for Ukraine and Poland. This is a confirmation of Ukraine's beautiful, dramatic path to a community of values and interests, requiring courage, sacrifice and imagination, said the Polish Prime Minister.

According to him, it is good that “today Poland and Ukraine confirm that one of the key conditions for a good ending to this historic road is the closest possible cooperation.”

– We didn't have to use any diplomatic formulas during our face-to-face conversation. In the relationship between Poland and Ukraine during the brutal war started by Russia These foundations of our friendship and cooperation are obvious, unconditional and will not change, he declared. He assured that “Ukraine can count on Polish support and Polish assistance, but also on the support of the entire European Union in defense against Russia's brutal aggression.”

– Independent, sovereign Ukraine, deciding on its own fate, is not only obvious historical justice, but also indisputably a market for the security of Poland and all of Europe – Tusk emphasized.

“The Polish Presidency will break the deadlock”

– We talked about the road (Kiev – ed.) to the European Union. And there are two things I would like to emphasize clearly. The Polish Presidency will break the deadlock that has been visible in recent months and we will work together with Ukraine and our European partners, unconditionally, to accelerate the accession process as much as possible, Tusk said.

As he admitted, “it's a lot of work.” – Poland is professional in this and our path to Europe, and later our European success, are guarantees that we will cooperate well with you on this path – he said, turning to Zelensky.

– And when the moment comes, when we are done with these bureaucratic activities, we will also talk in the language of specifics, not sentiments, also about our interests. Thank you for allowing us to talk openly today about conflicting interests and how to solve the problem, he continued.

– I also want to emphasize very clearly that it will not be like in the past. This means our relationships, our friendship will be built on real arguments and we will also be able to enforce (…) our interests when necessary. Because European Unionalthough it is increasingly becoming a community of security, it is also a community of interests. In this community of interests, everyone must be able to take care of their own interests. We will help Ukraine, but we will also guard our national interests. And this is obvious to both sides – emphasized the Prime Minister.

Tusk on the Volhynian crime. “This deserves to be called a breakthrough”

Tusk also referred to the issue of historical policy and the Volhynian crime. He assured that the Polish and Ukrainian sides “find a common language and methods of joint action when it comes to the issue of the Volhynian crime and these dramatic, sensitive issues in our history.”

– They require empathy from Ukraine towards Poland and from Poland towards Ukraine. It has to be parallel. I will not allow this difficult, dramatic history in Poland to be used for any political games, but I will also work very consistently for a quick, systemic solution to this problem, he declared.

He also thanked the Ukrainian side for their understanding. – This sometimes gets lost in political discussions, but it is quite an obvious problem to solve, which is the need of Polish families to bury with dignity their loved ones who were victims of the Volhynian crime – he said.

– The fact that we understand each other on this issue and start talking in normal language (…) deserves to be called a breakthrough. I know how much you have on your mind today, what your war means. I appreciate even more that you also find space in your minds and hearts for serious reflection on this matter. I know, dear Volodymyr, how much you are personally involved in this and I thank you very much for it, added the Prime Minister.
