Zelensky on JD Vance's plan: it would be a terrible idea

Zelensky gave an interview to the American weekly “The New Yorker”, in which he referred, among other things, to the plan to end wars in Ukrainepresented by the candidate Donald Trump for Vice President JD Vance. On September 12, Vance said that the war in Ukraine could be ended by an agreement to create a demilitarized zone along the “current demarcation line” and to give Russia guarantee of Kiev's neutrality.

“It seems that his message comes down to the fact that Ukraine should make a sacrifice. (…) The idea that this war should be ended by peace at the expense of Ukraine is unacceptable,” the Interfax-Ukraine news agency quotes a fragment of the interview.

Zelensky noted that he did not consider “this concept” a plan in any formal sense.

“It would be a terrible idea (…) – to force Ukraine to take on the costs of ending the war by giving up its territories. But that will of course never happen,” Zelensky said. He noted that such a scenario has no basis in international norms, the UN Charter, or (the rules of) justice.
