Drowning was the cause of the death of a 19-year-old Syrian citizen, whose body was fished out by divers from the Bug River near the town of Woroblin (Lublin Province). The man tried to cross the border river illegally. As testified by his three years older compatriot, they were both supposed to be pushed into the water by the Belarusian service.

On Tuesday (October 19), the Border Guard detained a 22-year-old Syrian citizen who illegally tried to cross the Bug near the town of Woroblin (Biała Podlaska District, Lublin Province). According to his testimony, he was pushed into the river by the Belarusian services and another man was with him.

The next day the body was fished from the river. Police confirmed he was a 19-year-old Syrian citizen. An autopsy was performed.

Proceedings towards manslaughter

– The doctor initially estimated that the man drowned, but we do not have a written opinion yet. Actions are underway in this matter – said Agnieszka Kępka, spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin, on Tuesday.

She added that the section took place on Friday. Proceedings are conducted towards manslaughter.

The 22-year-old Syrian is under the care of the Salvation Foundation

As for the 22-year-old, Lieutenant Dariusz Sienicki, spokesman of the Bug River Border Guard Unit, said on Wednesday (October 20), he was not interested in submitting an application for international protection in Poland.

– The Salvation Foundation took over. He will stay in Poland until Syria is recognized as a safe country – said the spokesman.
