The body of a 19-year-old Syrian was recovered from the Bug near the town of Woroblin in the Biała Podlaska poviat, whose search had been carried out since Tuesday morning. The circumstances of his death are being investigated by the police and the prosecutor’s office – said the spokesman of the Provincial Police Commander in Lublin.
The police established the identity of the young man, whose body on Wednesday just before 14 were retrieved from the Bug river by divers from the PSP water and diving rescue group. – The identity was confirmed by the second of the young men with whom he tried to cross the Bug illegally the day before. Documents were also found on the body. Also, beyond any doubt, he is a 19-year-old Syrian citizen, said Andrzej Fijołek, spokesman for the Provincial Police Commander in Lublin.
The policeman added that an autopsy was planned for a young man. The circumstances of his death will be clarified by an investigation conducted by the prosecutor’s office.

The spokesman of the Lublin Provincial Commander of the State Fire Service, senior asp. Tomasz Stachyra. – Just before 14 firefighters found the injured person at the search site. The divers excavated the body, said Stachyra. He added that the firefighters handed over the body and the place of the operation to the Border Guard. – At this our activities have ended – said the spokesman.
The information was confirmed by the spokesman of the Bug River Border Guard Unit, Lieutenant Dariusz Sienicki. – The District Prosecutor’s Office in Biała Podlaska and the police, which will continue to investigate this case, have been informed. Our role ends here – added Sienicki.
According to preliminary police findings, two Syrian citizens attempted to illegally cross the Bug from Belarus. “Unfortunately, none of them could swim,” said Fijołek.
Searching for a 19-year-old Syrian
On Tuesday morning, Border Guards revealed a 22-year-old Syrian citizen near the town of Voroblin (Biała Podlaska District). According to his testimony, he had been pushed into the Bug River by Belarusian services, probably with another man.
– We tried to act quickly from the beginning. We took the man to the facility to warm up. We gave him a change of dry clothes. He said there were two of them. Firefighters undertook a search and rescue operation – a spokesman for the NOSG informed. He added that Polish firefighters could conduct a search and rescue operation only on the Polish side of the river. – We informed the Belarusian services about the activities – said Sienicki.
As he informed, the 22-year-old Syrian was not interested in submitting an application for international protection in Poland. – The Salvation Foundation took over. He will stay in Poland until Syria is recognized as a safe country, explained the NOSG spokesman.
