Kazakhstan will have a nuclear power plant
At the end of 2024, a referendum was held in Kazakhstan regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant. Most citizens (as many as 70 percent) were in favor of this idea, so planning started. There were four offers on the table. They were made up of: Chinese national nuclear corporation, French EDF, South Korean Hydro and Nuclear Power and Russian Rosatom. The latter won. Rosatom proposed to finance the project, and currently work is underway to clarify the details. The offer from Russia was considered “the most optimal and beneficial”. Cost The investment is estimated at 10-12 billion dollars.
Will you reconcile business?
The Kazakhs have a diplomatic plan to involve all these companies. “Rosatom was appointed a leader in an international consortium aimed at building the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan” – was transferred in a communiqué, opening the way to the inclusion of other companies. Three companies would enter the mentioned consortium, although it is unofficially said that This plan will not burn out and the Russians will build a power plant themselves in Kazakhstan. China will get an additional contract
President of the Atomic Energy Agency Almaamadam Skatalyv informed the local media that The Chinese state -owned company CNNC Corporation was elected a leader in the construction of a second nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan. – It is currently planned to sign a special general agreement with the People's Republic of China on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. We want to use Chinese technologies to build another nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan – he emphasized. Negotiations with the Chinese side in this matter were to start.
Strategic place
It is not known about where and under what conditions, the Chinese power plant will be built. We know more details about the first – Russian. It is supposed to be Tworeactor power plant. It will be built in the partly abandoned village of Ulken, about 400 km from Almat. Near the power plant is Lake Balkhash, the second largest lake in the country.
Energy gap to be filled
When Kazakhstan was part of the Soviet Union, he had nuclear power plants. Even Soviet nuclear tests were held in its area. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, the newly created state gave up the atom, as well as Ukraine and Belarus. Currently, however, Kazakhstan is not able to produce enough electricity for his own needs, so he looks at nuclear energy.
