British intelligence said that despite previous failures, the Russians are preparing for another offensive in the Wuhledar area. Such a move, the British say, may be due to pressure on the commander of the unit operating there. The American Institute for the Study of War in its analysis quoted a Russian war blogger who claims that Russian troops have begun an advance towards Kupiansk, Lyman and Seversk.

The British Ministry of Defense has published the latest intelligence analysis. “For the past 48 hours, heavy fighting has continued in the Bakhmut area. Ukrainian forces keep the supply routes to the west open, despite being encircled by the Russians in the last six weeks,” we read.

“In the Donetsk region, the city of Wuhledar has once again been heavily shelled. There is a real possibility that Russia is preparing for another offensive in the area despite failed attacks in early February and late 2022.

As it was added, such a decision may result from criticism and pressure exerted on Ruslan Muradov, the commander of the Russian unit operating in the region, after previous failures.

“However, it is unlikely that Muradov’s units will be strong enough to achieve a breakthrough,” the British wrote.

ISW: The Russians are attacking in the direction of Kupiansk, Lyman and Siwersk

The American Institute of War Studies (ISW) in its analysis quoted a Russian war blogger who claims that Russian troops have begun an advance towards Kupiansk, Lyman and Seversk. Nevertheless, the blogger added, the terrain, forests and Ukrainian fortifications make it difficult for the Russians to advance on the front line in the western part of the Luhansk region.

The Ukrainian side also reported on Russian operations in the direction of Kupiansk (Kharkiv Oblast) and Lyman (Donetsk Oblast), assuring that the attempted attacks had been repelled.

Around Avdiivka, also in the Donetsk region, the Russians increased the pace of operations, but made no progress there on February 22, the think tank estimates. According to Russian sources, fighting continues in the western suburbs of Wuhledar, but the Ukrainians control the higher-lying areas in this area.
