“Kiev. An important day is ahead of us,” wrote Tusk and published a short video from the Kiev train station.
On Friday evening, Tusk, Macron, Merz and Starmer met in Rzeszów. A photo from conversations was published by the head of the Polish government on Saturday morning on his profile on X.
On Friday evening, the Chancellery of the Prime Minister also informed about conversations. Politicians – following in the footsteps of the United States – intend to appeal to Russia about “total and unconditional 30-day weapon suspension”.
Statement of leaders before visiting Kiev
In a statement published on Friday, four leaders “confirmed their support for President Trump's appeals for a peace agreement and we call Russia to stop blocking it.”
“Together with the United States, we call Russia to accept the total and unconditional 30 -day ceasefire to allow conversations for a fair and lasting peace,” we read. As he added, politicians also want to pay tribute to the defenders of Ukraine killed and wounded in this war led by Russia, in Majdan, where flags commemorating these victims are waved. ” “We will continue to increase our support for Ukraine. We will intensify our pressure on the Russian war machine until Russia agrees to a permanent suspension of weapons,” it was written. Macron, Merz, Starmer and Tusk in Kiev will meet with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelnski and will take a remote meeting with the other leaders of the “Coalition of Volunteers”, i.e. ready countries to grant Ukraine to “Security guarantee”.
According to a joint statement, other countries are to be informed about “progress made to create a future coalition, which will connect the air, land and sea forces to help restore the Ukrainian armed forces after a possible peace agreement and build trust in future peace.”
“Coalition of the Volunteers”
“Coalition of the Volunteers” was created on March 2 this year on the initiative of the Prime Minister of Great Britain Keira Starmer in order to develop a comprehensive support plan for Ukraine, ensure its constant access to weapons and take action to end the war. It includes 33 countries – mainly European, as well as Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Türkiye. The coalition did not include USA, some Balkan countries, Hungary and Slovakia.
The “Coalition of the Volunteers” allows NATO members to jointly actions outside the formal structure of the alliance, which avoids the potential veto of countries that do not want to engage in military activities for Ukraine.
