The war in Ukraine, the Polish reaction to the situation of Ukrainian refugees and the upcoming presidential campaign in the USA were discussed in an interview with Michał Sznajder in “Fakty po Faktach” by well-known CNN journalists Dana Bash and Wolf Blitzer. – This is really something unprecedented, which I have not seen anywhere else – said Bash, referring to the humanitarian uprising of Poles.

Michał Sznajder: You and my guests are excellent journalists of the CNN station – Dana Bash and Wolf Blitzer. Taking this opportunity, I would like to know the American perspective on the Russian assault on Ukraine. When you cover it, when you talk to the most important people in Washington, to the politicians about it, what is the debate like?

Wolf Blitzer: I think it’s still very hard for all of us to believe that Russia she really did what she did. So many years after World War II – the attack on a neighboring country, the brutal murder of all these people. When International Criminal Court accuses Putin and Russia of war crimes, this is obvious to all of us who have seen the brutality of this war: Russian rockets falling on civilian targets, on hospitals, on schools, on parks, on residential buildings. When we see what is happening, we still find it hard to believe that it is happening here and now.

Dana Bash: One of the most important things you hear from people – even here in Warsaw last year, when everyone was shocked that it even happened – was an understanding of the idea of democracy. Understanding that democracy is at stake. Putin is not simply trying to appropriate a piece of the world for himself, he is trying to destroy a neighboring democratic country. So it speaks very strongly to us Americans. Will it last forever, this willingness to donate American dollars, our military resources? We don’t know that yet.

“Something unique that I haven’t seen anywhere else”

MS: One aspect is the humanitarian dimension. What is the awareness of Polish participation in aid for Ukrainians? Is there any awareness of this in the United States at all?

WB: Yes, absolutely. This is something that has really greatly improved the image of Poland in America. Because what the world has seen, what the United States has seen, is that Poles took in millions of Ukrainian refugees who came to your country with nothing really. And you immediately provided them with not only food and drink, but a roof over their heads, access to education, and medical care. And it really showed what Poles are capable of. It can be said that this greatly improved the image of Poles in the United States.

DB: Yes definitely. From America’s perspective – looking at other war-torn countries in the world – what Americans see are these monstrous pictures, refugees who have to wander without homes. None of these things existed in Poland. There wasn’t, because the Poles accepted them right away, and it’s really something unique, something I haven’t seen anywhere else. I was here for a week a year ago, preparing reports on this very topic – about the Polish reaction, this amazing reaction not only of civilians, but also of the entire country.

UK: And not only the help of the society, but also the military help that Poland gave to the Ukrainian army was impressive – tanks, now even planes, rockets, ammunition. This is really a very definite help that has been widely reported.

What will the US presidential campaign bring?

MS: What kind of presidential campaign is coming up in the United States? What should we expect? You are excellent political journalists, so what should you pay attention to? What is your advice for foreign viewers?

DB: Expect the unexpected. We don’t do political predictions anymore, or maybe we never really did, but each election makes us realize one thing: voters are smart, they make their own decisions, and they tell us what’s important.

UK: It will be a very dynamic campaign. Not only on the Democrat-Republican line, but also within the Democratic Party itself and within the Republican Party. There will be clashes and reshuffles. For me, for Dana, for everyone who covers politics, this is going to be a very exciting time in American history.
