Protesters in Berlin called on the government to deliver Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. “Shame! Shame! Shame!” – shouted among others. Talks between defense ministers at the Ramstein airbase ended without an agreement on the matter.
On Friday, located in Germany the US base in Ramstein, under the leadership of the head of the Pentagon Lloyd Austinanother meeting of the Defense Support Contact Group was held Ukraine. The most important contentious issue is the consent of the government of Germany – the manufacturer of the Leopard tanks – to the transfer of such machines to Ukraine by several European countries, including Poland.
During the conference summarizing the meeting of ministers, Austin said that he had nothing to announce about possible deliveries of US M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, as well as German Leopards. He added that the two cases were not related.
On the sidelines of the conference, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that he had issued an order to check the availability and number of Leopards owned by Germany, but this does not mean much – it is, as he said, “a possible preparation for a possible decision” on the transfer of tanks.
Meeting allies FOR THIS in Ramstein left Ukraine in limbo, they failed to agree on the supply of battle tanks. Instead of the Leopard tank, after Friday’s meeting there is “Leo-pat” – commented the portal of the “Bild” daily.
They protested in Berlin
On the same day, protests were held in the German capital against the government’s inaction regarding the transfer of the Leopards. The banners carried slogans such as “Free the Leopards”, and the participants chanted: “Shame! Shame! Shame!”.
– I am demonstrating because I am disappointed that Ukraine is still not getting the weapons it needs to win this war, to end this terrible war. They need more tanks. I never thought I’d be protesting the supply of tanks. I was a Buddhist, actually I am still, but yes, in my opinion, Ukraine must be able to defend itself,” Sabine, a protester, told Reuters.
The Leopard 2 is the first mass-produced Western tank, which was included in the so-called third post-war generation. The most produced version of the tank was the Leopard 2A4. Currently, the latest version of Leopard is 2A7.
