Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a truce on the front lines in Ukraine for 36 hours. This would give Orthodox believers the opportunity to participate in Christmas services. Ukrainian authorities had previously claimed that a possible truce was a “cynical trap” and “an element of Russian propaganda”.

In the communiqué, Putin wrote that he had instructed the defense minister to introduce a truce along the entire front line. The statement stated that the Russian side “calls on the Ukrainian side to declare a truce” in order to give Orthodox believers the opportunity to “participate in services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.”

According to the Julian calendar, the Orthodox celebrate Christmas on January 7.
